…As I drove up the last hill the Trials Park my mind started racing. It had been a long time since we had been out here and my mind was plagued with anticipation. We have never had a game at the park after a week of heavy raining which had only stopped the day before. Would the parking lot be a bog that would entrap vehicles in a muddy mess? Would everything be so wet that the players would be soaked within a half an hour of playing? Would the trails be slippery from mud? Did winds destroy our picnic cover structure? Was it safe?
I finally cleared the top of the hill and all anticipation and worries faded away as the magic of the place took me over. The truck smoothly traveled over the grass covered parking area without a single slip or slide. I was the first one there and shutting off getting out of my truck I was greeted with a dampened quiet silence of fog shrouded forests. The mist of the fog made the place feel mystical - almost like some ancient battle ground with spirits whispering of the want of players on the field. Off in the distance the shadowy image of a herd of deer faded out into a swirl of ground cloud. THIS was going to be an AWESOME day of TAG!
As people slowly started showing up the excitement and fun started to build. Paul was the first on the scene with two other guys…as they exited their vehicles - they too were excited by the heavy fog on the fields that were going to make for a new interesting aspect of the game, it was just a matter of minutes before a 4 man game was up and going - and the fog did not disappoint! Vision was about 200' - and strangely enough the range of the guns did not seem to be hampered… If anything it was easier to land hits - my guess is the fine water particles were diffusing the beams making the normally narrow beam wider. TMBs were AWSOME, close range shots became ubber-easy. I was even having no problems landing hits with LTX pistols for which I'm still honing my aiming skills.
James C. from the Forest Grove Laser Tag finally arrived and had all his custom guns and gear along with 4 of the top FGLT players. There was a lot of enthusiasm as members of our group were able to see the new "TOYS" for the first time. Although later on being on the receiving end of some of the moded gear against our stock gear - that enthusiasm turned to a small bit of griping. I think the COLTs group is might be seeing some members start moding gear in prep to return the favor the next time the FGLT comes to play…grin.
The day went on with many battles from simple skirmishes, to capture the flag, to Hold the Fort, to Zombies Hold the fort… Throughout the day I couldn't help but marvel on how much the fog seemed to enhance the games and raise the bar on the adrenaline & thrill. Four o'clock came and went too soon, requiring the FGLT to pack up and leave, and us doing the same in a race to get all the gear packed away and stowed before the place went completely dark on us. Unfortunately different groups had already made plans leaving to a splitting and everyone going in their separate ways. My wife and I and Lenard's family carried out the age-old Tagging tradition of getting some pizza and relaxing sore muscles (& injuries for Lenard) looking forward to the next outing. Which is …egad! Today! Gotta run and get ready…er well, more like hobble and get ready…getting old bites!
